First Electric Motorcycle To Benefit From New ‘plug-in’ Grant Hits UK Roads
Wuxi ChuangGe Technology Co.,Ltd | Updated: May 04, 2017

The first e-motorcycle to have been bought with the help of the new ‘plug-in’ subsidy for two-wheelers hit Britain’s roads today.

The plug-in motorcycle grant was finalised by the government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in October 2016, following the success of the plug-in car grant, which has been available since January 2011.

Fred Murphy from Redhill, Surrey, was the first customer to benefit from the subsidy, when he collected his Zero FXS from motorcycle dealership 21st Moto in Swanley, Kent, earlier today.

Murphy traded in a petrol bike for the electric one. The biker of more than 25 years attributed his purchase of the e-motorcycle to an interest in new technology.

“As an ‘electronics geek’ and an early adopter, I have always been interested in electric bikes and tried my first Zero back in 2012, so when the ‘plug-in’ grant finally came in, this was enough to justify my jump to electric,” he said.

The £10,490 Zero FXS has a range of up to 60 miles, a top speed of 85mph and costs the equivalent of one penny a mile to power, via a household three-pin plug.

The new grant covers 20 per cent of the cost of an electric motorcycle (up to a maximum of £1,500) in an effort to increase the uptake of electric vehicles.

Rob Francis, the dealer principal of 21st Moto, said he believed that the system of claiming the subsidy was extremely easy for customers. “The dealership does all the work, so there are no forms to fill out or paperwork to complete,” he said.

“The dealer makes the application direct to OLEV and the price is reduced by £1,500 or 20 per cent of the total purchase cost, whichever is the smaller number.”

Steve Kenward, the chief executive of the Motorcycle Industry Association, which lobbied for the subsidy, added: “Whether electric or not, a motorcycle, scooter or moped benefits from reduced journey times, easier or free parking, no congestion charge and is normally cheaper to run and insure. There is also the added benefit that it’s just more fun than other modes of transport.”
